Program Rewrite - What Language?

I've put the plans in motion to do a full rewrite of the current music logging program at KRUI, aptly named KRUI DJ. Done in Java, and basically, here are it's functions:

Tracks current DJ via login, and thusly tracks their played tracks to report to the website

Gives them the option to change their displayed name and a DJ Bio

Program itself achieves this my connecting to our online database in order to select the track, or enter it if it has never been played before (SQL)

Desktop-based application, not an Applet

My question is, based off of these things, what language should I develop the new version of this program in? I plan to move away from Java. I'm thinking about either Python or C#, and I'm looking for something that works well with SQL databases and also something that gives me the option for implementing new features and a new, nicer looking UI. What do you guys think?

Federated Search

Okay, so I've been looking for a good search tool for my local and remote files (I.E. those files on my bro's PC or on one of my other computers) for quite some time now. The integrated search in Vista was a big step forward, but it was only recently that I learned about Federated Search and it's glory.

Basically, the idea of federated search means that you can search remote file shares (or remote resources) from your desktop with the actual task of searching beging delegated to the remote box. Therefore, your machine isn't bothered with searching some network share (which can be SOOOO SLOOOOOOW)...instead this task is delegated to the remote server who then searches it's local index, automatically filters out results that don't match your permissions, and gives you the results. All the while, your machine can compute PI, or compile code, or whatever without taking any hits in performance or I/O.

For those of you familiar with Vista/Win7 searching, you know that it is very easy to find files that you've included in your index VERY quickly and accurately. Well, now you can do the same with files on other machines too. Federated search is included in Server 2008 and can be enabled by adding the File Services->Windows Search Service role.

Another benefit of this new searching framework built into Win7/Server 2008 is the integration of OpenSearch technology. This allows us to get results from remote websites/servers right in Windows Explorer. Here are a couple links pertaining to this:

http://windows7news.com/2009/09/23/how-to-use-windows-7-federated-search/
http://geekswithblogs.net/sdorman/archive/2009/05/14/windows-7-federated-search.aspx
http://trycatch.be/blogs/roggenk/archive/2007/11/05/windows-vista-amp-windows-server-2008-federated-search.aspx

NOTE: before "installing" the OSDX files make sure to change the http to https so you get the benefit of being safe from the prying eyes of your ISP and others.

I probably missed some points here as I've only just begun to explore this new technology, but this should be enough to give everyone a heads up. Also, if you want to get ISOhunt results on your desktop (using Win7) then look here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/3804d1233149355-windows-7-search-federation-providers-isohunt.osdx ---> remember, this is only an XML file so you can open it in a text editor to inspect and edit the HTTP to HTTPS

Using Windows 7 may lead to murder?

Interesting review of Windows 7:

"The official release of Windows 7 is only a few weeks away, and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably asking yourself what effect this will have on your lives. Will the gates of Heaven open up and a consort of large breasted angels descend to guide you into computing heaven? Or will it be more of a low key affair, maybe involving the cast of Friends and a degrading video?

So I decided to apply my powerful brain to the problem, and find out what Windows 7 would mean for you, the average user. With only pre-release versions and betas available for download, to get a copy of the actual release version, I had to turn to eBay, where leaked copies have shown up recently. $150 and two days later, a package of bubble wrapped, technological delights arrived on my doorstep. I giddily tore open the packaging to reveal the contents."

Rest of the hilarity at: http://www.cracked.com/blog/using-windows-7-may-lead-to-murder/

So, I've been wanting to buy a treat for myself since I never bought anything fun and exciting with my State Farm money.

Now I read a review of the ZuneHD, and since you all know I'm all about Microsoft and world domination, it looked like the perfect new tech gadget for me to buy. My 8gb iPod touch just isn't cutting it anymore what with its limited space, LCD screen, and Apple's notorious restriction on the apps you can put on it (All I wanted was Opera mini... is that so much to ask for?)

Does anyone actually have one? Or has anyone played with one in person? The only thing that is holding me back is the fact that it only has wireless b/g, and with wireless N on the horizon I'm afraid they will come out with a 2nd gen with wireless N in a few months or so.

I'm trying really hard not to click the "Buy Now With 1-Click" button on Amazon...

Since I've had to do this a couple times I thought I'd post it here to help you guys out.

Grabbed this from Ubuntuforums:

Your folder containing your files is called "dvd/". It has one folder inside of it "VIDEO_TS", and may have a folder called "AUDIO_TS".

If your folder doesn't have an AUDIO_TS folder, create one, just so some older DVD players don't freak out.

Now run the following command:

mkisofs -dvd-video -o dvdimage.iso dvd/

And when it's done (takes 5-10 minutes) you have an iso you can burn to DVD.
